What good Italian food is supposed to be - simple but creative. Dinner reservations required.

Directions: 15.7 kilometers south of Sperlonga on the Via Flacca

I stayed at this hotel for three nights, and after tasting the dinner the first evening, decided to eat there the other two nights as well.

Each night a limited menu is offered with one appetizer, the choice of two or three first courses, two or three second courses (including a vegan entree), and two desserts. Most of the meat entrees are seafood creatively prepared (example, a cold seafood and couscous appetizer accented with condensed balsamic vinegar). Good local wines are available with dinner. All of the dishes were delicious, and all displayed the simplicity that outstanding Italian food ought to have, but seldom does.

Cost for a complete dinner (appetizer, two courses, dessert, a half-bottle of wine and mineral water) was about 70 Euros for one person. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

By the way, if you stay at the Hotel Grotta di Tiberio, the breakfast is wonderful and includes fresh made espresso or cappuccino, not the bland, machine made stuff many Italian hotels are offering with the colazione these days. The croissants are very good, as are the other breakfast breads.
