Very good food, regional Italian somewhat shifted towards French. Décor civilized but not excessively. Prices in the mid-range. *See note in review regarding 2004 closure.

Directions: Città della Pieve (PG)

Very good. The two meals here, each for 1, added up to €90.

Lunch: Farrotto al tartufo, with radicchio as window-dressing to give it some color, A; boar with apples and onions all' agrodolce, A. Fries, B — the cook's heart not in them (yet good fries can be just as good as anything else) — and a grigliata di verdure with a very good aïoli, A; 2 desserts — orange and almond cake, B+, a crème brûlée also B+ — and a hot mandarine punch to wrap it all up; half-bottle of Sagrantino (Adanti, 1999).

Dinner: Tagliatelle al tartufo B+, filetto allo zafferano A-, Fiano d' Avellino (di Feudi di S. Gregorio, 2002). Another crème brûlée, tozzetti al vinsanto B+, Moscato di Poli.

Overall rating: A-.

Note: Within a month after my stay in the hotel, they were slated to close for "8 months" for a major facelift, turning it from many small rooms at affordable prices to a few large luxury rooms. In Italy an 8-month construction project can stretch out much longer; at any rate, they should be closed thruout the 2004 season. The meals depend on the cook, of course; if they don't retain the cook thru the closed period, who knows what the food will be like when they reopen.
