Buonconvento: I Poggioli

Good homemade pasta, entrees nothing special, best panna cotta in Italy.

Directions: Right off the main road near the train station.

When we found it, it was a godsend because it was open! Family run - Dad and one daughter are cooking and another daughter serves. She's very nice and speaks good English. They have wonderful big salads (entree-sized), a couple featuring fresh mozzarella that was the creamiest & freshest we had. Homemade pasta was very good. Entrees were the usual tuscan meats, very good but nothing special. They have the best panna cotta dessert in Italy - just the right consistency & texture, it quivers & then melts in your mouth. It had an optional, delicious fresh berry sauce.

About $20/person with wine and dessert & a couple of courses.

One of the best meals in Tuscany at an unbelievably low price.

There were six of us for dinner at eight and we gave Guido full rein by asking him to prepare a tasting menu. He gave us five courses and desert and wine and grappa and the bill came to only 40 per person. The dishes were all extrordinary and I would list them but for the fact that you will have something different each time based on season, available fresh ingredients and Guido's creativity. A memorable, convivial evening!
