Castagneto Carducci: Il Cappellaccio

Outstanding pizza in the midst of a charming medieval village full of atmosphere-- making strolling before or after eating a fun evening. (Other foods served.)

Directions: Il Cappellaccio is located on the main street in the village.

The pizzas here are not only good but huge--unlike the typical one-person pizza of Italy. Three of us ordered two pizzas and ended up with half of one to bring home with us. I saw no one finish a pizza. The selection of toppings is extensive. The restaurant does serve pasta and other entrees but the reason to come here is the pizza.

I recommend reservations as we were not able to get in the first night we tried. It is a very popular place even though there is very adequate seating. The restaurant is located in the basement of an old medieval building and so it is quite atmospheric, plus there is a large patio seating area.

Castagneto Carducci is a well-perserved medieval village in the Maremma area of Tuscany (Livorno province)with a sense of not having been too terribly invaded by tourism and so wandering around is fun--great photo ops.

After dinner you have a pick of gelaterias to finish off the night's culinary experience.
