We had heard that Il Casale was one of the best restaurants in Umbrian and we were not disappointed. Initially we had our doubts because the menu had photographs of the food, but rather than tourist fare, we were treated with excellent food with a unique flare. Nice terrace with beautiful views of the valley below. The two of us ate for about 48 euros including wine. We drove from Spoleto and it was worth it. Visited this restaurant three times over 2 months--twice in a group of two and once as a group of four. Food was basic fare (overcooked and too oily) and not the best value in the area. We suggest L'Oca Brucciata in the town as much better fare and value! --and Masolino in Panicale--10 mins away by car--lovely food and people! Believe that the place may have lost focus compared to the other desciptions--they now cater for large parties and once our service was neglected as a result (too busy to bother with small groups!) Much better restaurants and value elsewhere. Reviewed by: Riccardo from Italy, review #267 When: 2002
Directions: Il Casale is just outside Paciano on the way to Chiusi. Take the road from Paciano to Chiusi and a few kilometers later you will see a sign pointing to it. There are two big pine trees where you have to turn left. Pina, the owner, is a very nice woman and she prepares all the food herself, including bread. If you sit outside you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Trasimeno. Reviewed by: Margaret from Italy, review #268 When: 2002
Josepina owns, operates and is the chief chef. Her menu is very different from the typical local restaurants and everything is fantastic. She serves homemade tortoloni filled with cheese covered with pesto, bruschette miste is the best, charcoal baked potatoes are a specialty, pasta with noci another delicious dish. She can seat you inside or outside. The terrace overlooks Paciano and the valley down to Lake Trasimeno. The flowers surround the terrace as do the walnut trees, rosemary bushes and lavander. The red and white house wines are wonderful. A typical meal for 2 with antipasti, primo, secundi, vino, water, dolce e caffe will run about 35-45 euro. Being a vegetarian, our meals tend to be a bit less without the meat. Every guest we have had gets taken to Il Casale and want to return often. The ambiance, the owner and the food all make it a wonderful Italian experience. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
