Make a reservation if you want to try what many consider the best pizza in Venice. The canal-side location is wonderful, too.

Directions: behind the church of San Giacomo dell' Orio

I'm just adding to what many reviewers have already said: try Il Refolo. The pizzas are among the best I've ever had. We also enjoyed the service and the outside tables. We had a pizza Margherita and a pizza del Doge (a pizza with ham, radicchio, cherry tomatoes and chunks of mozzarella cheese. We drank a 2002 Atters Collio Merlot. With water and coffees the bill came to 57.35 euro. Maybe a bit expensive but very worthwhile.

Go early and have a drink in the Campo San Giacomo dell' Orio - you'll have a great time watching the kids play while their parents catch up on the local news.

Best spot in Venice for warm weather dining, say I.

Directions: Behind the church of San Giacomo dell' Orio

NOTE: Il Refolo is only open April to October.

After reading rave reviews about Il Refolo, this trip provided our first chance to try it out. And they were right. We (DH and I) ate there 3 times for lunch during April/May 2007. We reserved, but those without reservations were also seated.

Among our favorites, the Greek salad, pizzas (traditional and inventive), pasta carbonara, and a tuna "hamburger" coated in sesame seeds. Everything was just done so well, no glitches. There are also numerous wine choices.

Good to see some locals there each time. The service is attentive and friendly. This being Venice, Damiano (the manager and son of the owner family) arrives in the sexiest boat you can imagine. But he is a real pro. One day we overheard a problem at a table nearby where orders were incorrect - he stepped in and handled the situation, provided a complimentary dish, and the customers left singing his praises.

A wonderful place to eat outdoors in Venice....

I read about this restaurant in Food and Wine magazine before I went to Venice in October 2003. It was in the neighborhood where I was staying, so I went there and liked it a lot. I ate at il Refolo twice in 2003 and ate there again in May 2004.

il Refolo is a beautiful place to dine outdoors – it has a very nice dining area right between a canal and the front entrance to the church of San Giacomo dell’Orio. It’s not in the Campo (the back of the church faces into the Campo), but when you walk around the church, you will see the tables and the awning that covers them.

The first time I ate here I had spaghetti with mussels and clams – delicious! The next two times I had pizza. The menu has pages and pages of pizza choices – I had vegetarian one time and gorgonzola with speck another. The pizzas were huge, very good and not very expensive. The house wine was good, too.

The Food and Wine article said that this place is owned by the same family that owns Da Fiore, which many people think is the best restaurant in Venice. The food is certainly good, and the atmosphere is great.
