Orvieto: Il Vincaffe Wine Bar

Via Filippeschi 39 , Phone: 076.334.0099

When: 2008

A delightful, contemporary wine bar featuring very good local wines and special culinary tastes.

Directions: Just follow Via Filippeschi out of Piazza della Reppublica to the end of that first block. It's on the corner.

I found this unique wine bar while wandering a few blocks from my hotel during one of my Orvieto stays and now make sure to visit whenever I'm in town. It's been there about four years and is run by two young local men who are very passionate about food and wines.

They offer a large variety of local wines, though do carry some from surrounding regions. It's a nice casual atmosphere and when I inquired about their business they said they are frequented mostly by locals. I think that's because they are not too near the Duomo but on the other side of Orvieto, where tourists can't find them.

They have some very unique dishes, just tastes really, not entrees or meals. I had a wonderful, refreshing salad of fennel, dusted with raisins and herbs and dressed in oil and vinegar. Their local cheeses and cured meats are great, too. They have probably a dozen varieties of cheese, both soft and hard, with quite a few interesting blue cheeses. When they serve bread it's a choice of white and whole grain, which I appreciate.

This spot is worth a visit or two. Perfect for lunch or late afternoon, before heading out to dinner.

Prices are most reasonable. Glasses of wine start at 3 euro, dishes are 3 - 8 euro.
