Umbertide: L' Abbazia

Umbertide (loc. Badia di Montecorona) , Phone: 075.941.181

Closing day: Monday

When: 2004

A bit pretentious, but the food is good, the atmosphere pleasant, the location excellent (next to a beautiful medieval abbey), the prices reasonable.

Directions: 4km S of Umbertide, immediately adjacent to the Abbey of Montecorona.

Large pleasant brick-vaulted room. The day I ate there, there was a 16E00 menu, which I extended a bit. 'Mpastonata ai fagioli con puntarelle di maiale e il loro sugo (3 balls of polenta in a good tomato sauce with bits of pork), B+; filetto di suino alle prugne con cipolline in agrodolce (3 thin slices of rolled pork with a dab of prune in the center, and next to them pearl onions), C+ since the mix, though standard enough and could have been very good, never blended nor sharply played off each other — not thought thru and needs work). I added a zuppa di ceci e di castagne (chickpea and chestnut soup), solid B+.

I tasted three desserts: homemade tiramisú (B), chantilly ai frutti di bosco (A-), and "semifreddo di 'crescionda' al brodo di gallina con salsa al cioccolato" (basically a brownie, somewhat crusty and gummy both, said to have chicken broth as an ingredient, quite undetectable (B+ despite the absurd name).

I chose to have just a small glass of no-frills red, OK. Coffee. €26 service included.

Overall rating from me: B.
