We had high expectations of this restaurant because of previous reviews and also the fact that it is a higher end restaurant. In the end, we wished we had just go to a trattoria somewhere. Although the setting is beautiful and the service was excellent, the food was not that enjoyable, particularly for the price. We each had 1 glass of wine, an antipasto and a primo. The bill was 80 euros. Had the food been good and unique we would not have minded paying this amount. It was very mediocre and one of my courses was cold. Perhaps this was an off day because I know that many people have enjoyed this restaurant, but we don't plan on going back. Reviewed by: colleenk from MA, review #1489 When: 2005
This was our 4th choice in Spello since all the other restaurants with a patio view were closed on Monday for lunch. If I return to Spello, it will be my first choice. Although you could not dine out on the patio, the view of the coutryside from the dining room window was spectacular on a sunny day. This restaurant won my group's heart for the most beautiful presentation. The food was also wonderful. The meal started with a complimentary assortment of appetizers on individual marble serving trays that included herring, anchovies with onions, salami wrapped in cucumber, a drinkable melon sorbet and tea with ginger. The diners decided on either a smoked mozzeralla ravoli or eggplant in a puffed pastry. The ravoli was very good but the eggplant dish was to die for. I believe we had the house vino rosso which was just fine. A complimentary plate of delicious cookies was served with our espresso. This restaurant is located in a lovely hotel, so had beautiful restrooms. One of our group would like to stay and eat here if he returns to Spello. Prices were in the moderate range for lunch. I guess I would characterize it as Nuovo Italian (if there is such a thing). A little more cutting edge. Ivan, a good friend of a good friend, is the wine steward (formerly at Piazza Onofri) and knows his stuff. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
