This is a place to have a superb meal in Scansano, the town of Morellino, one of Tuscany's better red wines.

Travelling from Massa Marittima towards Sovana, we targeted Scansano as a stop, mainly because we have been enjoying Morellino di Scansano at home. We found an old town under serious renovation, especially road work. It was the end of March, and we guessed it was all in preparation for tourist season. La Cantina had been mentioned in a Slow Travel publication, so we sought out this wine shop/restaurant. It was a fairly large, comfortable place with lots of wine bottles around, making for some good reading while at table.

We had a gorgeous feast. The highlights were the aforesaid wine, lovely breads of various kinds, an unbelievably good pici with cingale, lamb, and artichoke, a very good bean soup with black cabbage, and a cheese and celery flan that defied its simple ingredients by being delicious.

It was one of the best meals of our sixteen day trip. It cost us 85 euros. We were delighted, as we were with the Maremma in general.
