Directions: Take the bus from Amalfi center marked "Pogerola". (Or drive, following signs toward Agerola/Pogerola) Pogerola is 10 minutes up, above Amalfi. The restaurant can be easily found from the small town square. Pogerola is a small village in the cliffs above Amalfi. It takes only ten minutes by car or bus to get there from Amalfi center. For the more adventurous, you could walk up (or down) and enjoy the scenic stairway route. First, this is a great place because it is *not* in the crowded center of Amalfi and it is not a tourist restaurant. There's an indoor dining area and large back terrace with a view. (If you ask to borrow the binoculars, you can see Ravello.) The food is consistently great. I know this because we ate there every night they were open for two weeks. (We were staying at the Grand Excelsior down the street, which is a nice place, by the way.) All their pasta dishes were great. Fish was perfect. A couple of nights a week they grill steaks in the fireplace/barbecue in the main room. There's pizza as well. If you don't know what you want to eat, Mimmo (the owner) will suggest something. This is very good, typical Italain fare. Prices were very reasonable and lower than the restaurants in the center that we looked at. Last detail -- we happened to have a medical emergency at La Capannina. Mimmo and his family rushed to help us, called an ambulance, kept us calm and, the most amazing part, insisted that we call his cellphone later to get a ride back from the hospital in the next town. At nearly midnight, he drove over to get us despite my insistance that a taxi would be fine. (While I don't recommend the winding ambulance ride down, it's nice knowing they get there quickly!) The owners of La Capannina are generous and wonderful people and you will know it immediately when you enter their restaurant. A highly recommended detour from downtown Amalfi!
