Pietralunga: La Cerqua

loc. La Cerqua , Phone: 075.9460283

Reviewed by: Bill Thayer from IL, review #847

When: 2004

An agriturismo; very good dinner of country cooking; very good breakfast too, and the whole thing at an exceptionally reasonable price.

Directions: About 2.5 km out of town, to the SW: the place is well known; ask at a bar.

Antipasti: A plate of cold antipasti: eggplant, A but you'd better like garlic; a local pecorino, A- (and I'm not usually too big on pecorino); salame and pancetta both from the Cerqua's own pigs poor things, B. A plate of hot antipasti: 2 cheese crostini, one with peas (curious mix, but it worked: A-), the other with minced onion, A.

Ravioli, looking all the same but on dissection two kinds of fillings: one mostly ricotta, the other mostly a mix of greens, in a balanced sauce with sage and rosemary; good texture, somewhat oily, A-.

Four thin slices of something, either veal or, more likely, pork, with a single juniper berry cooked along with; B- but could have been an A with about six times the juniper than deglaze and purée.

Local red, not bad, slightly sparkling, went well with the food. Dessert, plain homemade orange cake.

My overnight room (good), plus dinner, plus breakfast, amounted to a total €55: this is very cheap. My overall rating: an A-.
