We had the worst meal of our entire trip to Tuscany and Umbria in this hole-in-the-wall delicatessen.

... Wild boar sausage sandwich was two thin and tiny slices of sausage in between two halves of a huge and thick piece of bread, ribollita was a heap of beans on a piece of stale bread soaked in a tasteless watery fluid and grilled vegetables were greasy pieces of fried (!) zucchini and eggplant.

Tourists at other table who were served chick pea soup in the form of chick peas heaped on a slice of wet bread were as flabbergasted as we were by the "feast." After we left, I realized that 18 euros we were charged for the "feast" included 5 euros added to the bill without explanation.

This was one of our favorite places to eat lunch.

Owned and operated by brother/sister Roberto and Sylvia, La Grotta Ghiotta specializes in products from San Gimignano only. The store is very small with a communal table and a few spaces at the wall-mounted bar table. But, the food and the experience were wonderful for a foodie. Proscuitto, salami, olives, pickled peppers and onions, local cheese and honey, fresh bread, good wines. Roberto runs back and forth between the meat slicer and the kitchen to get you a wonderful meal for very little money. Ribolitta and some salads are also offered. Highly recommended for the lunch experience away from the crowds and tourists. (A group of Italians actually thought we were Tuscan.)
