Outstanding food and great wine, on the eastern edge of the Chianti region.

Directions: In Cavriglia, eastwards "over the hill" from Gaiole towards the Val d’Arno and Arrezzo.

Another of Carla Capalbo’s recommendations. Here we had a fabulous meal at a place that seemed out of the way, perhaps, especially for those oriented inward towards Chianti. The wine list here was curious – not many listed and almost nothing in a higher price range. For a restaurant with such good food……???. I asked the waiter/owner (I never did quite figure out who was who there but I’m guessing that he was Stefano Cuccuini) to recommend a wine that was really good. He puzzled a minute while looking over the wine list with me and then he asked us to wait for a minute while he went into the kitchen. He came back bringing a bottle of his family’s own production – a "97 SuperTuscan that was fantastic –he didn’t say what the charge would be (we had been looking at things in the £40,000 - £50,000 range). When the bill came, he had charged only £25,000 for this fantastic wine!

The food was equally wonderful. We chose the tasting menu that included a large variety of small dishes – mixed antipasti, little grilled anchovies and zucchini, excellent spinach and ricotta filled ravioli, saffron risotto, fagottini (pieces of chicken wrapped in pancetta), arista di maiale, rabbit on top of bietola…. We hadn’t ordered any, but Stefano insisted that we try some home-grown zolfini and ceci beans – fabulous! Desserts were equally excellent – lemon curd on pastry, chocolate soufflé...

I can’t remember what the bill came to, but it was quite inexpensive for the quality and amount of food served. Don’t drink too much here if you’re driving the very wiggly road back towards Gaiole or Radda! I’d encourage others to go to this restaurant. The food was outstanding. Absolutely worth the trip. Thank you yet again, Carla Capalbo!
