La Locanda Dei Lupari opened in the summer of 2007 by chef Nicola Micchelini. Beautiful location; outstanding food.

Directions: Benabbio is in the hills above Bagni di Lucca.

While in Italy this summer we visited friends who have a summer home in the beautiful hilltop village of Benabbio, a wonderful town above Bagni di Lucca in Northwest Tuscany. To our surprise, we were treated to one of the best meals we had all summer in Italy.

La Locanda Dei Lupari had just opened weeks before but word was spreading quickly about this elegant, new restaurant set in a medieval, rustic village. Our friends told us that reservations were already necessary and lucky for us, chef/owner Nicola Micchelini had a lovely table ready for us.

Now that several months have gone by, it is hard to recollect all of the precise details of our meal but the memory of that evening remains with me.

All of the pastas are homemade and the sauces are outstanding. After an assortment of delicious appetizers, shared by the table, I ordered the pappardelle pasta with the most delicious sauce made from zucchini blossoms and brie cheese. My husband raved about his homemade tortelli with meat sauce.

We both enjoyed, as our "secondo" local trout accompanied by fresh, local vegetables simply dressed with local olive oil and lemon. My friend just returned from her summer trip and reported to me that she had the most delicious "cinghiale" as her departing meal, accompanied by local porcini.

This is a restaurant I would recommend for its elegant setting, in a wonderful location. My friend reports having had wonderful lunches at the bar there for under nine euros, complete with wine. For dinner, one can count on spending about twenty-five to thirty euros per person.

There is one road going up to Benabbio from Bagni di Lucca and any local would be able to point the way. This is a town not to be missed.
