Loads of charm in this cozy restaurant in the Sassi with pretty darn good food, too.

Directions: Sassi Barisano just below the plain, Matera

A cute eatery tucked into an excavated and restored cave that housed animal pens (the stone feeding trough is still visible) the new owners have managed to impart an upscale feel within the rustic stone, irregular rooms.

Service was attentive and sweet and at the end we were introduced to the owner's young son. Because we really enjoy the multi-plate sampling of antipasti served up in these parts we chose 2 portions of that for 4 people (plenty). It was a nice mixture of vegetables and sliced affettati (prosciutto and salami). Pastas are home-made. We ate the cavatelli with sausage and mushrooms and the orecchiette with broccoli rape sprinkled with sautéed breadcrumbs. I was too busy devouring mine to take proper note of what my cousin and her friend had ordered and now wish I’d paid more attention. I can say one of them ordered an exquisite semifreddo in a hazelnut crust that I was thankful got passed around the table.

Local Aglianico wine accompanied the meal. We were offered digestivi to properly finish off the feast.
