Siena: La Taverna del Capitano

Via del Capitano, 6/8 , Phone: 577.28.8094

Reviewed by: John Grenham from Ireland, review #2077

When: 2006

Good honest Tuscan food, fairly priced, but the waiter from hell.

A nice atmosphere and full of locals when we were there. The food was hearty and tasty - superb Ossobuco and Pici especially - and very fairly priced, about 70 for 8 courses between 3 of us, including a litre and a half of wine.

Unfortunately, we were there on the night when the local contrada was celebrating its win in the Palio and all the regular waiters must have been out in the streets whacking drums and dressed as Brazilian Carnival queens. Whatever the reason, somebody's slacker second cousin was dragged out of bed and forced to pretend to be a waiter for the night. He served antipasti and primi at the same time, tried to serve the same plate of roast potatoes three times, once with each course and more shrivelled each time, and eventually shuffled off muttering about us finding a different restaurant.

We had a good time, though, and so will you, as long as Bozo stays in bed.
