Taverna del Mago is in the center of Verbania. It isn't much to look at from the outside, but you'll forget that once you are inside this wonderful restaurant.

This is a true local Italian restaurant experience. Owned by a man known to all only as Il Mago, the restaurant is known for it's fresh ingredients, traditional regional cooking, and its superb wine list. The menu changes daily, although some items remain for the season.

We started our meal with the black pasta with shrimp, and then I had to try one of the house specialities, the ostrich fillet, which is brought to the table uncooked along with an Ollare stone to cook it on. Everything was excellent, from the food to the wine to the service. For two first plates, and the ostrich for two, excluding wine, we spent about 50 euro.

I highly recommend Taverna del Mago if you're looking to find an excellent local restaurant, not one of the touristy places. If you're lucky, maybe you'll catch one of the Mago's special event evenings, such as his all-ostrich meal, or the snail dinner, or when there is a local band playing. The events are listed on the Web site. This is a wonderful place.
