Lalibera in Alba, Highly Recommended *** Right in the old section of Alba with very modern décor. Small, but good wine list. Sort of a nouveau take on traditional piemonte foods. We had a nice bottle of S. Grasso Dolcetto, which was pretty good since it was a 2002. Appetizers were grilled peppers with anchovies and a gelled, cold bagna calda (very good) and a tart with cardone and cheese that was to die for. We both had tarajin with rabbit sauce that was very good. Definitely a place to go back to next time we are in Alba. Reviewed by: Robert from CA, review #627 When: 2003
Directions: In the town center of Alba Why it is called an Osteria rather than a restaurant is perhaps because the atmosphere is rather casual; my waiter was wearing jeans. Lalibera serves well made regional cuisine with a modern approach. I was sitting at the communal table in front as my wife was sick in bed. This gave me a chance to see the other 5 diners’ food as well as getting their feedback. Overall the approach was a little too modern for my tastes but very good, portions were rather small, but I am a large eater. The wine list is quite extensive with pages of Borolos, Barbarescos, Dolcettos and Barberas. I chose a Macarini Brunante Borolo '97 as we were visiting the winery the next day. The wine was quite nice now but would benefit from 5-10 more years in the cellar. My first course was bruschetta with fresh Tomatoes and Anchovies; the strong flavor of the anchovies was complemented by the tomato very well. Next was Tejarin (extra egg yoke) lasagnette pasta with Porcini mushrooms which was excellent. For my secondo - Brasato in Borolo which was adequate but disappointing compared to several other restaurants. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
