Directions: In the center of old Turin just one block south of Via Po. Despite it being published as closed for lunch on Wednesdays this delightful place looked like it might open for lunch. This seemed to be confirmed by a local man who caught the attention of the young couple rolling fresh pasta in the kitchen who seemed to indicate that they would open shortly. So we explored the shops under the arcades of Via Po and returned for a wonderful lunch. My wife ordered the eponymous vitello tonnato. This came as a surprise to us as it was a plate of almost carpaccio-like thin veal slices with a mound of delicious tonnato sauce and capers in the center. I asked for the roast rabbit dish I had seen on the blackboard in the window. Apparently this was the dinner menu from the previous evening. But a quick check revealed that the dish was available. The rabbit was crisp and tasty. Because this was a wine bar in Piedmont we broke our usual tradition of ordering the house wine in a carafe. Their house red (we had a choice of a few) was a delicious bottle of a 2008 Dolcetto. We shared a slice of a luscious pear cake with fabulous Torino chocolate. With that we splurged on glasses of two regional dessert wines, one based on Barolo. For this and a bottle of water we were charged 57 euros. We were also treated to a visit to their fascinating wine cellar. My only criticism is of the author of an otherwise extremely useful guidebook of Turin. The restaurant's name in French does not translate as Leaping Calf. And vitello tonnato is hardly a dish of veal in tomato sauce. Very odd mistakes from a woman born in New York in a family from Turin. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
