Very pleasant simple restaurant, full of locals. Smallish hand written menu in Italian only, but very interesting menu items. I have enjoyed every visit.

Directions: Within walking distance of City Walls. Head out of the gate at Piazza Santa Maria to the North. The restaurant is about 300 metres along Via Borgo Giannotti.

I had eaten at Locanda Buatino once before, in April 2005. At that time I thought that the food was good, but that they were perhaps a little over generous with the olive oil. We returned simply because it was very close to our rental apartment, and we were all too tired to walk down into the centre of Lucca. I am very glad we did as we enjoyed it enough to eat there twice during our short stay.

This is not a "flashy" restaurant. The tables are simply decorated with metal underplates, the walls are lined with a large choice of wines. Most of the customers appeared to be regulars as there was a lot of banter between them and the staff. The menus were simple - photocopies of a hand written original, 4 Antipaste, around six or seven Primi and a similar number of main courses and Contorni.

Among the dishes we ate were mixed crostini, a selection of cured meats, pasta with arrabiata sauce, grilled chicken with lemon, stewed squid with tomatoes, salt cod baked with potatoes and a casserole of pork in red wine.

We drank both the Red and White house wine, and mineral water.

The bill came to around €75 for four on the first night, and €90 on the second occassion when we had dessert or liquors and coffee.

Overall I found it a very pleasant, unpretentious place, and recommend it.
