Warm, friendly restaurant just off the lakeside walk with dish specialties

We found this restaurant by accident on a cool, cloudy Saturday in late October. We were unable to secure a table at Cavatappi despite the entreaties of a shop owner who was also the president of the local tourist board and the menu posted at Vecchia Varenna just didn't appeal.

We began a lovely lunch here with the chef's appetizer and a glass of Prosecco. This turned out to be smoked salmon. This was somewhat redundant with a shared first course called a Lake Tryptich. This was more of the salmon with two other fish preparations.

Jane had very good ravioli filled with pumpkin and I had an interesting pasta of tagliatelle sauced with a chestnut and bean puree. It was sort of a rich, individual pasta e fagioli.

We finished by sharing a platter of delicious regional cheeses (gorgonzola, parmesan, and three others). This was served with what the menu described as two 'pickles', but what I call preserves of lime and orange. Both were nicely spiced with red pepper.

With water and a bottle of of 2008 Teroldego Rosato, our bill was 67 euros.

As usual we were the first for lunch but soon other locals arrived.
