Family-run, welcoming, good Venetian food.

Directions: Just off Campo San Stefano: walk down the narrow calle (Calle delle Botteghe) between the two cafes opposite the West door. The restaurant is about 50 metres along, on your right.

My partner and I are regular visitors to Osteria alle Botteghe and always receive a warm welcome from the owner-proprietor Claudio. The food is simple, unpretentious and always excellent. Whether you come for a three-course meal, a snack or just a drink at the bar (watch out for Claudio's spritz, it is lethal!) you will enjoy yourself here.

I always go for Sarde in Saor, an excellent dish of fresh sardines with pine-nuts and onion. The pasta here is good too - my partner recommends a simple spaghetti al ragu. We always have house wine.

We recommended alle Botteghe to some friends, and they liked it so much that they ate here every day throughout their stay.

If you are visiting Venice in a group of eight or so, there's an area slightly separate from the main dining area where you could sit in a little more privacy; ask for it when you book.

Alle Botteghe is just off the "tourist trail" but still in the heart of Venice and well worth seeking out.
