Lucca: Osteria Baralla

Via dell'Anfiteatro

Reviewed by: Carol from CA, review #431

When: 2002

Typical Lucchese cuisine, reasonably priced, favored by tourists and locals alike, very family-friendly.

Directions: On one of the small streets surrounding the Amphitheatre in the historic center of Lucca

I've eaten at Baralla numerous times, for lunch and dinner, and always had good food, not spectacular, but very typical Lucca area fare. It is open for lunch and dinner, and is usually well-filled. Because it is near the amphitheater, it gets some tourist traffic, but not large groups, as far as I've seen. But it has a good trade also from local people.

Another advantage is that it is informal, no tablecloths but courteous menu service with waiters/waitresses who manage to communicate successfully despite language barriers, and a number of young families who come for early dinners with their children (it opens at 7:30, I think.) Typical menu items are Ribollita and other bean soups, zuppa di farro, the range of pasta offerings, salads, and roasted meats. Table wine is acceptable. The local specialties are very good at Baralla. Prices are moderate.
