Friendly, family run trattoria in the gorgeous interior hill town of Varese Liguria.

Directions: Hidden away in a side street off the main square. Follow the sign at the far right hand corner (with your back to the castle) of the square and then take a sharp left.

We had an excellent lunch here after a hair raising (but beautiful) bus ride from Sestri Levante.

There are only a handful of tables and no printed menus. The daily offerings seem to be a pair of pastas and secondi recited by the young waiter. His father runs the bar and his mother seems to be the cook.

We started by sharing a plate of antipasti della casa. This was the first restaurant where we learned the term 'dividere' which we used extensively throughout our trip. This was a generous platter of salami, prosciutto, cheese, and frittata.

We also shared a pasta of tagliarini sauced with a meaty ragu. Varese Ligure is closer to Emilia Romagna than the coast and it shows. The pasta seems to be what the cook chooses as a neighboring diner had the same sauce on what appeared to be rigatoni. It came on a platter with an extra plate for us to divide as we chose.

We then each had a secondo of a breaded and fried cutlet of (we think) veal and a meat spiedini of sausages.

With a bottle of water, a half liter of a local red, a cafe', and two grappa our bill was a very reasonable 35 euros.
