Very good, inexpensive trattoria on a side street in Macerata. Recommended in Cadogan Guide.

Directions: On a small street between the Sferisterio and Piazza della Libertà.

There we were in Macerata unexpectedly for lunch without any Slow Trav restaurant recommendations to consult! Help!

The Cadogan Guide recommended Osteria dei Fiori, so we thought we'd give it a try - and we weren't disappointed. Primi: Maltagliati con verdure - nice and light with asparagus, peas, tomatoes; spaghetti with a pesto made from arugala, walnuts, cheese - also nice and light - subtle; a local specialty, "Tagliuli pelusi", no eggs in the pasta - sauce was a meat sugo with fava beans - very nice. Secondi: filetto di maiale con borlotti (beans) - very good. Dessert: Tortino tiepido di cioccolato - quite good - their version of the dessert that you find in nice restaurants all over the US these days -- a mini chocolate cake with a warm, runny chocolate center. Very nice bottle of Verdicchio - 2000 Bonci Castelli di Jesi "Le Case".
