Nice small restaurant, offering a nice selection of gourmet dishes with good wine. Busy at lunch time, because it is in the University area.

Directions: Close to the Field of Miracles

We went to Osteria dei Mille with two friends. We had no trouble in finding an available table for four on a Tuesday evening around 8:30, but by 9 p.m. the restaurant was almost full.

The restaurant is in Via dei Mille, the street which connects Via Santa Maria and Piazza dei Cavalieri, so it is very close to the Leaning Tower. This makes the restaurant the perfect choice if you do not want to venture too far from the Field of Miracles, while avoiding the most touristic restaurants in Via Santa Maria.

The restaurant has a "different" menu. Not only you will find tagliata, bistecca (steak) alla fiorentina, or pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar), but also more peculiar dishes, such as gnocchi al gorgonzola and pinoli (pine nuts), black ravioli with fish sauce, orecchiette with fresh tomato, ricotta cheese and aubergine and carpaccio with balsamic vinegar.

We had a couple of glasses of excellent Brunello wine, but we could have asked for the local Chianti D.O.C. produced around Pisa.

The desserts are also very good: I had a green apple sorbet, and the other people had black tartufo with coffee, and a cream and strawberry semifreddo, which was also excellent.

The four of us had three courses each (primo, secondo and dessert), two bottles of water and a bottle of wine and of course coffee! We paid for all this 130 euros in total.

The restaurant can be very busy at lunch time because it is in the heart of the University area, and many professors go there for lunch.
