Easy going osteria with an excellent selection of food and wine

Directions: Easily accessible from the city gates

We first visited the delightful small town of Bettona on the day of a widespread power cut. Some establishments were able to remain open thanks to their own generators so we first visited the town art gallery and then Osteria dell L'Oca opened its doors.

The dining area is in the basement so you go down quite steeply to a charming, spacious room, with simple wooden tables and chairs with much character. Outside dining in the square is available in the Summer months.

We didn't have a reservation but we were made to feel most welcome even though they were busy.

I chose a salad for starters which was excellent and Richard had a wonderful rich soup. We both had a pork dish for our main course which was rich and heavy but very good. The wine list included a good local selection and we weren't disappointed with our bottle of Orvieto.

The smallish menu varies daily but the emphasis is always on the best of Umbrian cooking, so expect local hams for which Bettona is famous, Salumi, lamb, wild boar, pasta, and fish.

Desserts included warm oven baked cakes, ice cream and fruit.

I think pizzas are also available on Sundays. The Osteria was full on both occasions we ate there so reseve in advance wherever possible.

What is really nice about Osteria dell L'Oca is their willingness to please. I couldn't manage anything other than a salad and dessert on my second visit and they were very happy to oblige. This flexibility and friendliness along with excellent food in delightful surroundings at modest prices makes it highly recommended.

On both occasions the Osteria was full of Italians - what better recommendation is there?!
