Directions: North of Siena and 5 km south of Castellina di Chianti, right on highway 222 We have often used Dean’s Italian restaurant recommendations (located on SlowTrav.com), and it was his description of a rustic place with a bustling grandma waiting on 10 tables that brought us here. As we arrived it became apparent that the place had changed, and our first thought was “Oh no ... will this be good?” The place is now efficient and modern, with fresh green walls, and ivory woodwork. The staff is young and professional. All doubts slipped away when we saw the menu and got a peek at what other diners were being served. The well-respected local wine is wonderful and reasonably priced here, and the food is delicious. We declare it one of our best meals of the trip. I started my meal with a cold eggplant and cheese dish. The purple eggplant skins were wrapped around mozzarella and parmesan, flavored with a rich tomato sauce. It was beautiful to look at and had fabulous flavor. We both had the guinea fowl, baked in foil with vegetables. We are real fans of this bird, which is so rarely served here in the US. The bird’s breast was stuffed and rolled, then sliced for our packets. It was served in its own juices with a leg on top. These were the highlights. The space is comfortable, and the tables are not crowded. There is terrace dining as well, with a look down towards Siena. There is lots of parking right next to the restaurant, right off the highway - very convenient. The service was friendly and assertive – we felt well informed and received excellent recommendations. The owners also own an enoteca in the village, and the website indicates that they also have apartments for rent. Given the quality and attention to detail here, I would investigate these other enterprises. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
