Directions: Via Rosina is just off the square in front of the Mercato Centrale. The more famous Trattoria Mario is next door. The restaurant was only a couple of minutes walk from our rental, so was convenient for our first night in Florence after an early start. We liked it so much it was our choice for our last night's meal as well. It is an airy, mid size room, with no outdoor area, but with a glassless window opening at the front which was a nice summer compromise! The waiting staff are charming and low key and there is gentle music playing. A complimentary glass of prosecco is brought to the table - there is a long list of Chianti wines on one of the wall boards, but the house red was very acceptable. We had two courses on each of the visits - some antipasti and a main the first time (delicious chicken liver bruschetta) and pasta and desserts the next. The bill for three (two teenage girls not drinking, except for the prosecco !) came to around 55 euros each time which we thought was good value. Amongst the dishes we enjoyed were a wild boar ragu with pappardelle, spaghetti with clams, gorgonzola gnocchi, and meatballs. Reviewed by: jan55612 from MN, review #3695 When: 2010
Pepo is easily found because it is literally next door to the famous Mario's. Both are great places, but very different experiences. Where Mario's has great food, it is crowded, noisy, and fast moving. Pepo also has very good food, but it is quieter, slower paced, and uncrowded. I had lunch at Pepo twice in four weeks. On one visit I had peposo with polenta, which was terrific. Passage of time and lack of notes do not allow me to give more details, but I will definitely go back on my next visit to Florence. Colleen and I were hoping to eat at Da Mario which is next door but there was a 45 min. wait. We were hungry and popped right into PEPO for lunch. I'm so glad we did. Pepo is kind of a hip, happening place and the decor is welcoming. We sat in the front next to an open window which was lovely. I sat facing the window and narrow street and was entertained by drivers stuck in traffic. A patient lot I must say!! We both ordered the pasta special. Penne served with mushrooms, black olives, tomatoes, pancetta & parsley. The sauce was very light and let each ingredient shine through. I'm not a huge mushroom fan but this was delicate and extremely flavorful. I loved it! Although I didn't write it down, I think it was €7,00 each. I would go here again the next time I'm in Florence.
