Lucca: Pizzeria Sbragia

Via Fillungo 144

Very busy pizzeria full of mostly young locals and families. Not stylish or particularly relaxing, but excellent pizza at a reasonable price.

I love eating out at decent restaurants, and sampling local dishes and wine. Sometimes, however, either tiredness or budget mean that I just want a quick meal.

We walked past the Pizzeria Sbragia on our way to book into our apartment. It looked clean, and very full, and the wood burning oven is always an attraction. The take away section at the front was doing a roaring trade and the clientele looked local, so we thought it would be OK. We had to wait approximately 5 minutes for a table to become vacant, and, as the tables are cramped, were offered two seats next to a young Italian couple. The menu was printed in Italian, English, French and German. The waiter spoke English, but was happy enough to put up with my poor Italian.

The menu is limited to Pizza and foccacia breads. There are several varieties of bottled and draught beer, and house wines. Pizza was available as “normal” and “Large”. The large was very popular among groups of friends and families – but would have been more than two of us could have handled. We ordered two normal pizzas and ate half of each.

I am very fond of pizza, and those I ate here were among the best I have ever eaten. The house red was excellent. The service was fast and courteous. My wife and I ate here on two further occasions, and were never disappointed by the food.

Price wise, two normal pizzas, a half litre of red wine , a litre of mineral water and two coffees came to around 18 Euros. Beer was more expensive – working out at 4 euros for a 500ml serving as opposed 3 euros for a half litre of wine.
