San Marco: Ristorante All'Angelo

The biggest rip-off we experienced in our 14 months in Europe. Whatever were we thinking when we decided to have lunch here?!
We had spent the morning touring the Doge's Palace and needed a break before touring the Basilica. We decided to pursue an early lunch. I had read that the restaurants around the square were very expensive, so we thought it would make sense to get a few blocks away from the square to find a good, reasonably priced restaurant.
We ended up on a small side street (just down from a huge Venetian glass place that advertises glass-blowing demonstrations) with several restaurants. We wandered down the street looking at several posted menus, and allowed ourselves to be enticed to this interesting-looking restaurant by a waiter soliciting guests. We sat inside at a small table looking out on the narrow street.
In hindsight, we should have gotten farther off St. Mark’s Square, or ordered the much more economical Tourist Menu at this place.
Kelly and Charley had pizza, Kelly had an order of artichokes, and I had a pasta dish. Charley and I had a mezzo-litre of wine and Kelly had a Fanta. We had a bottle of water. That was our lunch.
Our bill was -- gasp! -- €74. 74 euros (almost US$100) on a PIZZA LUNCH!
The coperto was €3.40 each (which I had not been attentive to). Kelly’s Fanta was an amazing FIVE EUROS. We had planned to eat dinner out that night, but after this expensive lunch, we ate at home. I would rather have had a gelato for lunch and gone on a gondola ride for this $100. The meal was only fair, terrible for the price paid.
In hindsight, we hadn't gotten far away from St. Mark's square at all. We didn't look closely at the fine-print on the posted menu. We shouldn't have let a waiter entice us in. (Bad sign!) This must be the restaurant that people are talking about when they tell stories about getting ripped off in the tourist restaurants near St. Mark's square.
