We visited this restaurant last week on our last night in Tuscany. In terms of potential Beppone is a real winner. The owners have clearly spent a lot of time and money on the transformation of the old cellar that houses the restaurant, it looks superb. Unfortunately, the service does not match. Despite being only two thirds full the service we received was slow and disinterested. Having ordered our food we waited an hour and a half for it to arrive and received only a grudging excuse for this from the manageress. We were not the only ones; other customers were having a similar experience with many leaving in disgust. The food? Well when it finally arrived it was 'quite nice' but that's about the biggest compliment I'm prepared to give it. In the restaurant's defence it had been recommended by a good friend of ours who's not usually wrong. I think the service just needs a good shake up. If it were in the UK Gordon Ramsay would love to get his hands on this place and frankly, it needs him! Reviewed by: luce from Germany, review #910 When: 2003
The first time by sheer chance we came here searching for a restaurant off the main street with masses of tourists and expensive restaurants. We strolled around in the old medieval city with the high towers and a litle bit downwards we came in the Via delle Romite. It was a real discovery. A lightened lamp and a plant at the door showed the Ristorante Beppone. Downstairs we found two nice guestrooms and to the back outside a little garden place. The chief Beppone speaks English and German and showed himself as a very nice and friendly man with excellent knowledge of food and wine. We had a wonderful meal with various sorts of pasta and delicious salads, perfect main courses with meat of typical Tuscan cuisine and I was enthusiastic about the vegetarian pizza. The wine selection is very good and extensive. We have heard a lot of locals, they seem to like the restaurant. This was our first visit at Ristorante Beppone. And we came back every day of our two-weeks-stay in San Gimignano. Here everything for lunch as well as for dinner is quite alright and we are totally satisfied with service, food and beverage. Everything is prepared fresh and lovely with excellent ingredients. We tasted very much different dishes - all were delicious. The prices are fair. The atmosphere is nice. Guests, staff and the chief are cheerful. Often you can hear laughing. That is a very good signal. We will come back! After a perfect meal you can go up the Via delle Romite in direction to Piazza della Cisterna (the central very beautiful place, where you meet everyone) and from the street you will have a tremendous, lovely look at the Tuscan landscape.
