A great place for tasting the typical Ferrarese specialities before enjoying a late-night passegiata!

Directions: At the corner of Via del Gambero with Via Bersaglieri del Po, in the pedestrian zone of the centro storico.

Ferrara version of sausage and mash!, photo by

This place was right around the corner from our B&B (Locanda Borgonuovo), inside the pedestrian zone of old Ferrara, so I thought it couldn't be any good. Was I wrong!

Ferrara isn't a heavily touristed town and we were the only Americans in the place. I was interested to see how the cuisine in this corner of the Emilia-Romagna differed from that of the Veneto, with which I am most familiar, so we ordered the set Ferrarese menu. Two antipasti started us, a cold plate of thinly sliced regional salamis and a warm basket of fried bread dough, a local speciality called "pinzin". Primi were pumpkin ravioli and the local version of macaroni and cheese. Secondo, by which time we were ready to burst, was some very salty chopped sausage atop mashed potatoes.

Evidently, the local cuisine is heavy on carbs and cured meats, not that there's anything wrong with that! We squeezed in a few bites of chocolate cake and strawberries for dolce. It proved an outstanding dinner at an excellent price, about 25 apiece including several carafes of wine and lots of water.
