It was a rainy night and we need something near our apartment. We chose Cafaggi based on the recommendation in Sandra Gustafson's Great Eats book. I found her review did not at all match our experience. First, it was a huge restaurant, but only 4 tables were full, and this at 9:30 p.m. There is almost no decoration at all, so one feels like in a cafeteria. I usually enjoy "mom and pop" places, so I'm not looking for huge atmosphere; but it felt "dead." My husband's meal was mediocre. I had the one of the best soups of my life: the onion soup was absolutely delightful, and on a rainy night. But then came my least favorite meal of the month long trip to Italy: I ordered baccala con ceci, which I took to be a kind of stew. Instead, it was a square of fish and chickpeas, not dressed, on the side, kind of rolling around. I couldn't eat more than 2 bites. Reviewed by: Pokey from MA, review #1585 When: 2005
Cafaggi was recommended to us by fellow SlowTraveler, MaryJane Cryan. We arrived right at opening for dinner, perhaps a bit before, and were welcomed with a smile and seated. A lovely, comfortable atmosphere; we immediately felt relaxed and ready to eat. We opted for the menu turisto, €16,50, wine and water not included. We both thoroughly enjoyed gnocchi with ragu bolognese and a mixed salad. I also had 2 delicious grilled pork chops, not greasy. Very good. Anthony had a dish that resembled beef stew. Sorry, I can't recall the name and didn't jot it down in my notes - he said it was delicious. I had half litre of vino bianco della casa, 1 litre of water. Anthony had half litre house red. The bill came to €41. The staff was very friendly and most of the staff spoke English very well. It seemed to be filled (mostly) with tourists. It was fun to see the entire family helping out, they were so charming! I definitely recommend Cafaggi. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
