Directions: At the back of the Piazza Lucia If you want to taste good Italian food, typical of the region, it’s worth seeking out the restaurant “Il Cantuccio” towards the back of the “Piazza Lucia” in Santa Maria di Castellabate. Whilst it serves excellent pizzas, I’d encourage you to also try the other dishes on the menu, which are all freshly prepared to order. In particular I’d recommend the numerous sea food dishes which are especially tasty being made from a variety of locally caught fishes and shellfish and if you are not sure what to order, the staff will be happy to recommend dishes of local origin. The prices are reasonable and menus translated into different languages (including English) are available. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful so, even if the English isn’t perfect, it’s always possible to arrive at some form of understanding. And, if you wish, you can wash your meal down with good, local wine. Enjoy! Reviewed by: willit from UK, review #3344 When: 2009
I ate here with my wife and parents several times in September 2009. The restaurant is in the corner of the large Piazza Lucia. It can get quite noisy, particularly in early evening when it seems that most of the youngsters in the town are involved in one or more games of football. The majority of tables are under an awning sort of cover outside. It was always busy with tourists and locals alike - many families with young children ate here, and many locals arrived through the evening to pick up takeaway pizzas. The restaurant staff were always exceptionally friendly and helpful. The menu is quite varied with various seafood and pasta dishes, but mostly a large array of Pizzas. The menus in English often have what can only be referred to as "idiosyncratic" translations. The pasta with seafood an "turpin tops" (in Italian this shown as broccoli but was a spinach type leaf) was particularly tasty as was the whole grilled squid. Pasta dishes averaged around €5-6 as did pizzas. The Grilled squid was a little more expensive. A litre of local wine was around €7, and a 660ml large beer about €4. As an everyday place to eat, I would highly recommend Il Cantuccio. It is not going to win prizes for appearance, or Michelin stars, but the food is very good at a reasonable price.
