Directions: at the Hotel Il Chiostro We were staying at Hotel Il Chiostro di Pienza and reserved for dinner there our first night. It was very lovely with a terrace view. The food was outstanding. We were given glasses of Champagne upon arrival. Rex started with a salad of air-dried beef, arugula, and 2 kinds of pecorino and I had gnocchi with eggplant and a pecorino sauce - rich, but delicious. Rex chose a pasta with shrimp, lemon, and tomatoes as his main course and really enjoyed it. I had a thinly sliced sirloin done rare with arugula and hot olive oil that was outstanding. It was also served with lightly roasted potatoes and sauteed spinach. Stephanie and Alex had gnocchi and penne pomodoro and straciatelle (chocolate chip) gelato served in waffle cups. We were very impressed with our wine service. It was the first time on this trip that the glasses were "washed" with the chosen wine before it was served to us. We had a delicious Canetto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 1999 riserva - fabulous! Total, with 3 half-liters of water and 2 espressos, was about €120. The servers were very courteous and friendly, but again, the feeling was still elegant and special. It made for a wonderful Saturday night dinner.
