An uneven, yet satisfying lunch.

Directions: In the old center of Sarnano.

There are only 3 trattorie, I think, in the old center of Sarnano. Upon the recommendation of some locals and after checking all of them out, we decided on Il Vicolo. It was quite a mixed experience.

The waiter recommended the mixed antipasto, so we started with that. We thought we had ordered one antipasto to split, but when it arrived, it was clearly for two people. Oh well, we thought we'd try :-) to push ourselves..... And we were glad we did. How do you spell fabulous! Really, really excellent - and more diverse than other antipasti we had in the area. Two kinds of farro, great salumi, terrific vegetable things on pastry (spinach, a mini-pizza of sorts....) - about 12 different things, each wonderful.

Then the primi arrived - HUGE portions -- way too large - it reminded me of eating pasta in an American restaurant. The pasta con sugo di cinghiale was good, but the the pasta con funghi porcini e tartufi was not. The porcini mushrooms were definitely from a can or jar and had a slightly off, tangy taste.

The house red wine was not good. We'd been pleasantly surprised in general with the quality of house red wines. This one was disappointing. We had originally ordered one plate of venison to split, but cancelled that order when we started having major problems plowing through the pasta.

So... 2 people: antipasti for 2, 2 primi, wine, water, coffee (no dessert - you know we're full when we don't order dessert) - 30 Euro!
