Directions: After going north from Umbertide, turn left at the sign for Niccone. The restaurant is a few hundred yards up on the left. Parking is in a lot next door. Ginda Simpson of El Marsam told us about Nonna Gelsa, which is only about 10 minutes up the road from Umbertide. It's a place you could go back to over and over and always be pleased. We had two antipasti and two secondi (a variety of pork - sausage, bacon, ribs - for me and lamb chops for my wife). Everything was quite tasty. For the complete meal, including water, but no wine, we paid 40 euros. If you're anywhere in the area, stop in. You'll be glad you did. Reviewed by: popeye from CT, review #863 When: 2004
My group of family and friends (9 of us) decided to descend upon the small village of Niccone this May for dinner at this Slow-travel recommended restaurant near our house rental. We had not made a reservation but the english speaking waitress reluctantly assented that they would do the best they could for us on such short notice. She went around the table taking orders from an excellent selection of simple, fresh country fare at bargain prices. Just my luck that when she got to me, they were out of my primi selection. I gestured to my ample girth and explained to her that it was not easy nor inexpensive for me to have achieved such proportions and that I was disappointed. I chose a chicken dish with roasted peppers and proceeded to make do. Returning with our wine, the waitress came over to me and announced to the table " I think you are pregnant!" This, of course had everyone at the table holding their sides laughing which only served to egg her on further. "Twins in fact" she added. A few minutes later, arriving with our antipasti of assorted meats, cheeses and grilled veggies, she came over to me and put her hand on one side of my stomach and then the other-"their names are Francesco and Chiara". At this point, everyone at the table is crying and I can't remember what the hell everone else ate! We returned here a week later and had another excellent meal (I had a rabbit stew) with outstanding service. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
