Directions: One block from the Castel dell'Ovo Marino is probably our favorite place to eat in central Naples, and one that we return to often and take most of our visitors to. They remembered us on our second visit and greet us warmly whenever we return, even when (as today) it had been six months since our last visit. Start by asking for pizza bread (pane pizza) - essentially just a baked pizza crust with salt and herbs that melts in your mouth when served war. The antipasti are very good, especially the fried calamaretti (baby calamari, fried whole) which we order on nearly every visit. The assorted vegetables on display by the door can be ordered as starters or as contorni. Other fried options are also excellent, including mozzarella in carrozza and a mixed plate of crispy fried zucchini and fried mozzarella. Pasta is excellent, especially the local scialatielli (a local specialty something like roughly cut spaghetti) alla sorrento (tomato & cheese) and penne "scuie scuie" with lots of sauteed eggplant. Pizzas are also excellent; my favorite is the Sant'Anastasia with fresh tomatoes and fiore di latte (mozzarella made from cows' milk rather than buffalo milk). They also have excellent gnocchi and a deadly spaghetti con vongole. Sadly, I don't think we've ever made it to secondi here, but the fish and meat dishes certainly look and smell good. Desserts are homemade and very good including an excellent torta della nonna. Prices are very reasonable. We spent €35 today for lunch for two, including calamaretti, 2 pizzas, wine, water, and coffee. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
