Well rated restaurant in a charming town disappoints, hits us with a 5 euro coperto and charges for water.

Directions: Autoroute A1, exit Orvieto; follow 448 towards Todi, turning right to Civitella del Lago.

We made a special trip to check out this well-reviewed restaurant in the charming hill-top town of Civitella del Lago, overlooking Lago di Corbara. The view was spectacular, to be sure, but you will pay a premium to sit in an overly fussy, tense room. We foolishly skipped our usual review of the menu before entering, which was a mistake, as we would have noticed the 5 euro per person coperto (the highest I had seen in any restaurant in Italy) and turned on our heels.

For lunch: three copertos, a bottle of water, two glasses of wine, two soups, one pasta, one dessert: 115 euros. To paraphrase Woody Allen, the food wasn't great, and it was in such small portions that we left hungry (couldn't afford to get anything else).

The service, perhaps because of our small order, was chilly and patronizing. The owner/waiter assumed that we did not understand the menu (our menu Italian is excellent!) and had no knowledge of the area (we lived nearby). When he discovered that we knew local people, his tone changed dramatically.

Visit Civitella del Lago, certainly, but give this restaurant a miss.
