Directions: By the Abbey of San Galgano, 3km from Monticiano, 25km south of Siena along the old road 73. Salendo - Wine Bar is a recently opened (May 2004) wine bar near San Galgano Abbey. The name, Salendo, means "going up", and in fact the wine bar is on the road leading up to the church with the sword in the stone. The wine bar is very small, it only has 4 tables but it is in the middle of a very nice park, with tables to eat outside enjoying a great view over the Merse Valley and the beautiful abbey of San Galgano. Salendo serves exclusively products of the best local producers, choosen directly by the owner. You can order a selection of "cold plates", that is selections of "affettati" (sliced salami/ham) and of cheese, vegetables, "sott'oli" and "sott'aceti". They are served in a fancy and tasty way in combination with the most suitable wine. You can also choose among many different wine labels and buy bottles of wine at very competitive prices. You can also buy the products you have tasted. They have a good selection of home made desserts, which are changed everyday. It is a very good place to stop for lunch while visiting the abbey. In the winter it closes around 7 p.m. but they are planning on staying open later in the summer and on organising "apertitivi" outside. Highly recommended, especialy because it is really different from the usual restaurants or bars and the products are really local and from small farms.
