Intimate tavern, popular with locals. Good menu selections (pastas, meats), including several dishes featuring truffles (tartufo).

Directions: By the Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata, not far from the Piazza San Benedetto and the basilica.

We visited Norcia on a pretty Sunday in early July, accompanied by a visiting friend from America. The town seemed filled with Italian families enjoying a day out. I bought a hiking vest in a shop and asked the friendly woman if she had a suggestion for our lunch. She sent us around the corner to the Taverna de Massari, which she said was the best place in town.

We were early for lunch, and most of the other people who came in after us seemed to be locals. The owner wasn't especially receptive to us (maybe because we didn't order all the courses), but we liked our waitress - she made up for him. We shared bruschetta and then each had a pasta dish and finally dessert. I had the Tagliatelle porcini e tartufo and loved it. (I could never afford anything with truffles in France!)

Our bill for four people was €64. Our friend from America (on his first visit to this part of Italy) especially enjoyed the experience. The "taverna" atmosphere was intimate and comfortable. Despite the gruff owner, we'd eat here again for sure.
