Castello di Frontone: Taverna della Rocca

Via G. Leopardi 22 , Phone: 0721 786218

Reviewed by: Amy from MA, review #1460

When: 2005

Informal restaurant in a hilltop town. Very popular, and seating is at long tables you may be sharing. Verbal menu.

Directions: From the Cagli-Pergola road, drive up to the Castello of Frontone, park, and walk into the main street. The restaurant is approx. halfway down the street.

We ate twice at Taverna della Rocca in Frontone (teeny hilltop town off the Cagli-Pergola road) where there's no written menu, but you essentially choose from the house antipasto misto (prosciutto, cheese, crescia); a choice of pasta (tagliatelle, gnocchi, or ravioli with your choice of funghi, anatra, ragu, burro and salvia sauces); and a secondo of arrosto misto, mixed roasted meats (lamb, sausage, pork) cooked at the fireplace. There's one or two contorni choices at each meal; we had a mixed salad at lunch, and cooked greens at dinner. The restaurant is two cozy rooms converted from the Rocca's stables, and you sit at shared long tables. It seems popular with extended families and groups of friends. On a chilly day, it's nice to sit near the open fireplace, and watch the women cook meats and crescia, a delicious local flatbread.

Since the menu is verbal, it's helpful to understand a bit of basic Italian. Our shared antipasto, one primo, one secondo, one contorno, house wine and coffee was 32 euros.
