A beautiful gourmet food shop on the way to Assisi

Directions: in S. Maria degli Angeli, right outside of Assisi

Not a restaurant but such a beautifully done gourmet food shop that I wanted to review it. As part of Letiza's cooking class at Alla Madonna Del Piatto in Assisi, she takes you to this lovely shop to pick out antipasti, sample some cheese, meats and liquors and learn about various olive oils and pastas before the cooking lesson.

The owner Barbara Righetti has laid out her wares in a very pleasing and artistic manner. Warm rust and orange hues welcome you into this great smelling shop. In addition to having a large selection of meat and cheese, she sells fresh bread, sauces, truffles, high quality olive oils and vinegars, dried seasonings, beautiful pastas, chocolates and wine. I could have bought out the store if my carry on allowed it!

We tasted caciotta cheese, caciotta with truffles, pecorino stagionato and pecorino di fossa. The prosciutto was divine -- as were all the products we sampled. If you are renting a place in this area, this would be a great place to stock up on Umbrian delicacies for the week!
