Biggest disappointment in our 2 week trip.

My family was aware of the "iffy" reputation of some of Venice's restaurants, so having a personal recommedation for Trattoria Orseolo was a comfort. It did not turn out to be comfortable.

Please do not get the restaurant confused with Locando Orseolo (where we stayed.) The hotel is wonderful; the restaurant was woeful. To get right to the point, we were the first guests of the night and watched as table after table were served before us. A family friend had e-mailed the owner, Enrico, and mentioned that we were coming. We did not see Enrico until we paid the bill ... and prior to that it did not go well.

We explained to our server that we had eaten a large antipasti course earlier and that we were interested in a small shared appetizer, 4 varied primo courses and that we would like two of the fish of the day to be shared. This was after 11 days in Italy and we had a pretty good grasp on how to order. Unlike all the other restaurants, we let the server do alot of the choosing - and the total at the end proved as much: €500 for the 4 of us, including two bottles of wine. We normallly would only have one bottle of wine but decided for another while sitting there for over 3 hours. Again, we were only having 3 courses.

The owner did try, and offered us dinner on the next night, but it was our last in Italy and we declined.
