Forget the lace - go to Burano to eat at a very traditional, wonderful trattoria. It can be expensive, but they serve the freshest fish you'll ever eat.

It's been years since I've looked at al Gatto Nero's menu. Instead of reading the menu, I asked Max, the headwaiter, to tell us what we should eat. He never pushes and lets us order in stages, depending on how hungry we are.

In May, we started with a large collection of seafood: clams, all sorts of grilled fish, baked stuffed tomatoes and grilled artichokes. A little pasta primavera and lots of red wine (after a welcoming glass of prosecco) and our tummies were happy.

A classic!
