Delightful, charming, homestyle trattoria specializing in fish.

Directions: At the back of the Piazza just off the port.

The three of us discovered this friendly place while waiting for the elegant Ristorante Al Granzo to open for lunch. The staff were aloof and would not make eye contact when we tried to discern when they opened, so we explored the square.

The owners of Trattoria Collio greeted us like long lost family. The small dining room was almost deserted when we were seated a little before noon. By the time we left they were packed with local residents.

We started with a delicious mixed antipasto of cold seafood and a plate of sardines in saor.

I tried a bowl of the local bean and sauerkraut soup called yota (also Jota). It was enough for three people. I found it interesting but a tad sour for my taste.

Then two of us a wonderful fritto misto with more of the tasty sardines and the third ordered the calamari fritti.

With a liter of a local white wine, two bottles of water, a coffee, and grappa our bill was 55 euro.

The room of about eight to ten jam-packed tables was excellently served by the lone waiter. He was always attentive and managed to anticipate all our needs.

Sadly, as in many restaurants in Trieste and the Friuli, the bathrooms were rather primitive.
