Delightful lunch at an elegant restaurant in central Assisi

We had a delicious lunch in October at this elegant trattoria at the top of a steep alley off the cenral square of Piazza del Commune.

The menu consists of typically Umbrian dishes beautifully prepared and exquisitely presented. This was probably the best and most elegant service we had in Umbria.

Starters included smoked salmon, stuffed canneloni, and a robust vegetable soup. Secondi were slices of roast veal loin, boar stew, and a luscious rabbit stew with apples and both saffron and curry.

Desserts were probably the weakest segment of the meal with a standard tiramisu, a not terribly interesting dish with pasta and apples and nuts, and a standard fruit crostada.

The meal for 3 people with 1 (Rosso di Montefalco) and 1/2 (Grechetto) bottles of wine, coffee, and grappa came to €100.

Although thas was at the higher end for most of our Umbrian meals, it was definitely worth it and one of the highlight meals of the trip.

La Fortezza works from every standpoint. It was our second visit. Great food, fine service, very pleasant ambience, located close to the central square.

Directions: A few steps up from the Piazza del Comune.

Our September, 2006 visit to La Fortezza was our second. We had been to Assisi several times previously and remembered that La Fortezza was close to the Piazza del Comune. This meal was lunch, which included two antipasti (salumi of Norcia) and two secondi. mineral water, and one dessert. Fine presentation, most pleasant service, and outstanding food. The check was 34 euros. Excellent value. Highly recommended.
