A very good trattoria located in the heart of Montepulciano.
Directions: located in the heart of the town, near the grand piazza
We ate at this restaurant on two nights during our three night stay in Montepulciano. I have been all over Italy and I can honestly say this trattoria was one of the most enjoyable. The pizza was excellent. The atmosphere very fun, charming and relaxing. A lot of the locals eat here, which is usually a good sign.
We ordered the margherita pizza with basil, buffalo di mozzarella and tomatoes. The pizza was very large and one of the best. The salad bar, that's right, a salad bar, was one of the best salads I've ever eaten in my life.
We had lasagne which was very good, although their lasagnes are not as overwhelming as you normally get in the US. The layers of pasta are thinner, less cheese and meat.
On one evening I ordered off the menu of one of my all time favorites, frutta di mare (fruit of the sea) and the chef presented the dish himself in a large oval dish which seemed like a platter. Even though we were in the middle of Italy, it was, without a doubt, one of the best frutta di mares I've ever eaten.
The waitress, Francesca, was very kind and treated the kids to complimentary desserts and allowed me to experience vin santo (holy wine) as an after dinner drink with a large cup of biscotti for dipping. Need I say more? The icing on the cake was the bill came to about 65-70 euros for three adults and three children, including wine, of course! Without a doubt, a must place to dine when in Montepulciano.

Very good pizza!
Being married into an Italian family and from Naples to boot, I'm quite particular with pizza. I always compare pizzas to the ones I had in Naples or the ones that my mother-in-law cooks. Not wanting a large lunch, Reenie and I shared the Pizza Toscana, made with porcini mushrooms and sausage. The crust was thin and cooked just right. I was quite satisfied! We also had bottled water. Equivalent of US$12.80

Small trattoria in center of Montepulciano specializing in pizza.
Directions: On the main street in the center on Montepulciano.
This was where we went for our first meal in Tuscany, and we wanted to try everything! The food was good, but we probably would have been better off sticking to the specialty... pizza. Most of the customers ordered pizza and it looked spectacular. We each had pasta which was excellent and then a secondo which was just ok.
I'd recommend it for a light meal or pizza. The bar looked like a fun place to spend some time as well.
